PAPHOS
Honeymooners, lovers, or indeed anyone with a sense of romance will enjoy a trip to the goddess of love's birthplace. Aphrodite was born on the western side of Cyprus, near Paphos, an ancient town which truly reflects Cypriot culture. The area is also near the Akamas Peninula (famed for its agro-tourism), and is cosseted by the hilltop villages in the Troodos Mountains. Ancient ruins abound, and the area is family friendly with sandy coves and plenty of nearby forest areas. Golfers can also enjoy a game at the Secret Valley or the Tsada Golf Club. The area is also renowed for grilled halloumi - a local hard cheese, Commandaria - a sweet wine, and that old staple guaranteed to keep the kids happy, pizza. The Akamas Peninusula is a sight to behold in the spring, as it breaks out into a sea of orchids. The spring and autumn are the best times for walking or hiking in the area, as temperatures soar up to around 33°C in July and August, with approximately 12 hours sunshine daily.
