LARNACA
Larnaca, to the south of the island is one of Cyprus' most heavily populated towns. The international airport, oil refinery and one of the biggest harbours are all notable parts of this vibrant city, alongside monasteries, medieval churches and a variety of ancient monuments. It's also distinguished by having a strong Biblical link - the first bishop of Larnaca was none other than Agios Lazaros (Lazarus), who made his home there after Jesus raised him from the dead. The ninth-century Byzantine Church of St. Lazarus is reputed to hold his remains. As if this wasn't enough, the area also sports a unique salt lake. In the winter the lake is home to thousands of pink flamingos. But in the summer when the daytime heat becomes too much, head for the hills and coastal plains. Like most popular Cypriot resorts, Larnaca also boasts a healthy night-life, with plenty of restaurants, bars and clubs. The towns of Lefkara and Ayia Napa are also nearby.
