EATING OUT
The Cypriots love their food and eating is an important pastime all over the island. Both Greek and Turkish Cypriot cooking have a heavy reliance on strong herbs and seasonings. While Greek Cypriots however cook a lot of pork, the Turkish Cypriots tend to use more lamb or chicken because of their religious beliefs. If in Turkish Cyprus be sure to snack on Ekmek Kadayif, a pastry made with cream and syrup. Or sample some homemade Turkish Delight - the authentic stuff is like nothing you could ever purchase at home. One of Cyprus' most famed dishes is of course mezes, and every visitor should try one. A veritable eating 'session', relax as dish after dish is brought to the table, including spiced meats, smoked meats, roasted meats, olives, cheese, pickled vegetables, and various fruit dishes. Just tell the waiter to stop when you can't possibly take anymore! Zivania, a strong local liquor is the traditional accompaniment to mezes. The tavernas are also a great venue for sampling himomeri - a pork that has been marinated for 40 days in red in wine, buried in sea salt and finally smoked for three months. Cypriot wines are also quite good, especially the Commandaria - a sweet dessert wine. The national beer is called Keo.
